In the last few years, it has become much more common for some of the most beloved films to start working on a sequel, old TV shows having reboots years after having aired its last episode, animated films being made into knock offs following different scripts, and for viewers — like me — it’s exhausting watching the same plot play out or the same actors be in every film or show.
It feels like now any time you see a new trailer for a “top upcoming” movie that you can already guess what the entire plot is about just from the trailer, or have the same feel about it as you did another movie that came out a couple months before with the same actor or filming style. Within the next year, there will be a “Toy Story 5,” “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and a third “Minions” movie all of which I am not excited to see really at all.
For the new “Toy Story” all I can say is it should have ended with the last one, as it was intended, based on the trailer the storyline is mid and ironic as kids will most likely watch the movie on their iPads. “The Devil Wears Prada” is an iconic film and beloved by many and with the sequel coming out 20 years later there are very high expectations, which I think won’t be met simply because it’s so hard to replicate a film that has such high levels of popularity and in the end ruins the entire series sometimes. For the “Minions” movie, it could be fun, but I feel they are still holding on to a movie line that probably needs to stop.
These movies are examples of why the film industry is failing, due to the mediocre actors and predictable stories as well as constant reboots and unnecessary sequels. They’re forgettable. Movie liners don’t hit, costumes aren’t “iconic,” actors aren’t having breakout roles and while this can be traced back to social media influences and directors feeling the need to be too relatable and characters all looking the exact same, individuality is non-existent.
All in all, I simply just want originality and I bet most people would agree with this statement. People like to have variety and in a world where everything has become so assimilated, new directing aspects, new faces, new ideas are what bring in more viewers. That is why “Star Wars,” “Avatar,” and “Jurassic Park” were and are still so popular.
The fact is there are so many creative people out there, so many resources for those in the movie industry, yet things are quickly and messily produced. An additional annoyance is how movies are marketed, again so many new ways and resources and yet movies are spoiled within a one minute trailer and over popularized before they even come out.
So until movies and shows start to bring new things to the screen, the movie industry will continue to plummet and viewers like me won’t go to the theatre or pay much attention to new series and films, but rather rewatch the classics.
