Today, the 2026 lip dub was held during the school day. Students lip synched to popular songs from the past years. In honor of the original videos, I will be sharing my favorite throwback songs from the 2000s-2010s that defined my childhood.
The first song I classify as a childhood song for me is “Timber” by Pitbull and Ke$ha. It came out in 2013, and I absolutely loved that song. It’s high energy, pop and such a fun song to dance to. I still remember part of the Just Dance to this song even though I haven’t done it in years. Everyone knows this song and, to this day, if I play this song for other people, they always sing along. It is a no-fail mood booster.
“Immortals” by Fall Out Boy came out in 2014 for the Disney Movie “Big Hero 6.” Both the song and the movie were big hits. I really enjoyed the movie and, since the song was written and recorded specifically for it, I loved the song. I rewatched the movie so many times and when the song came on the radio, I was always so excited to hear it. Although I don’t listen to it still, when I heard it a few days ago, I was taken back to being a 7 year old again, watching my favorite movie.
Rihanna rose to fame in 2005 with her hit song “Pon de Replay,” but my favorite of hers actually came out in 2007, “Umbrella.” The first time I remember hearing this song was with one of my older sisters in the car. We were driving to her gymnastics practice, and it was playing on the radio. I memorized the lyrics pretty quickly and begged my dad to play it in the car for every drive after that for a while. My sister would sing the song each time it rained, and we even came up with a dance to it. In 2017, Tom Holland performed it in a lip sync battle against Zendaya. The performance went viral, and the song shot up in streams.
Lady Gaga is considered a global superstar and has had multiple hits over her 17 year career. My personal favorite song of hers is “Applause,” released in 2013. It is such a fun song, and the rhythm of it is so catchy. I think this song is one of the few that has stood the test of time and is still a pretty popular song. Lady Gaga has a wide discography, but this is the one I think represents my childhood the most. It was one of five songs I had on my old iPod touch, and I would always skip through the other ones to hear it again.
My overall favorite 2000s-2010s throwback is “Classic” by MKTO. It came out in 2013 and is one of my favorite songs that I remember listening to when I was younger. It is upbeat and nostalgic. Every time it comes on in my car when I am driving, I am reminded of how happy of a time it was. The lyrics are so fun and positive, and the tone of the song is so pop and lively. It cheers me up whenever I hear it.
Not every song ever made will stand the test of time and be beloved through decades. There are so many factors that affect popularity. These pieces of music are the ones that represent my childhood to the biggest extent.
