Anyone But You

Wolf Weekly 02/09: Opinion

On Christmas Day of 2023, a new movie was released, which quickly rose to fame and fans immediately fell in love. The rom-com “Anyone But You,” starring Sydney Sweeney as Bea and Glen Powell as Ben, grew loved by many, but seemed overrated to some. However, “Anyone But You” is one of my new favorite movies, and deserves all of the love it received.

The movie starts with the two spontaneously meeting in a coffee shop and getting to know each other throughout the day, but that relationship quickly ends when nasty comments are overheard by Bea. Coincidentally, the two had mutual friends, and both ended up at a wedding in Australia, where the drama continues. They then agree to a fake dating love trope to keep their family and friends from bothering them, and they both end up falling for each other once again.

Although not strongly advertised, “Anyone But You” was a Shakespeare adaptation, spun off of the play “Much Ado About Nothing.” The protagonists in the movie are Ben and Bea, named after Benedict and Beatrice from the play. This to me made the film even more enjoyable, and, in my opinion, was the best movie released in 2023. This film was definitely worth watching in theaters, and I recommend it to any rom-com lovers like myself.

The movie was very enjoyable to watch, and, overall, was very funny, while also being romantic. The jokes were not overused, and it was all together a very well produced film. It stayed true to the storyline, while adding modern aspects throughout the movie. I normally seem to get bored easily especially when watching movies, but this film did not disappoint and it kept me intrigued the entire time.
