What started as a Snapchat story has grown into one of the school’s most entertaining student-run social media accounts. Created by seniors Rohan Chalamalasetti and Wesley Abraham, the Instagram account “bvswfoodreviews” has won over many hearts, while focusing on school lunches, restaurants and guest appearances from students and staff.
Abraham did not think the account would grow that much since it started so small, but he said he was later proven wrong.
“It started out as more Rohan’s thing,” Abraham said. “It was like a Snapchat story, and then a lot of people wanted to get added to it, and then we made an Instagram account together, and it’s kind of grown since then.”
Beyond the food, Abraham believes their account has been a way to connect with others during their last year of high school.
“My favorite part is all the people that have been on, like bringing guests, getting to know different people and bringing the school together in a unique way at the end of the year,” Abraham said.
For Chalamalasetti, the account has also helped make his senior year more memorable.
“Second semester senior year is pretty boring, so it’s a way to make it interesting and to just have something fun to do,” Chalamalasetti said.
These reviews have sparked opinions on the foods served at Southwest. Abraham said he has enjoyed multiple of these dishes.
“I really liked the muffins,” Abraham said. “But I think one of the best reviews was the pasta with chicken.”
On the other hand, Chalamalasetti said he had a clear favorite.
“The scalloped potatoes [were my favorite],” Chalamalasetti said. “They’re really good.”
As their account continues to grow and gain followers, Abraham said they are already aiming higher.
“Originally, when we made an Instagram account, we jokingly made a goal of 500 followers by the end of the school year, but it looks like we are easily going to hit that,” Abraham said. “So, I guess 1,000 followers would be the next goal.”
As of April 16, the account had 521 followers. Both students agree the impact this account has made on the school has been worth it. They hope students will keep watching not just for the reviews, but for the fun and school spirit behind it all.
“People should follow because it’s fun,” Chalamalasetti said. “And they can win cool giveaways and get prizes and stuff like that.”
