“I thought I was going to be a Vet but after this class I have changed and am now thinking about becoming a neonatal nurse or doctor,” Hensler said.
Exploring Health Professions is a class where high school students get the chance to travel to different hospitals and shadow different kinds of doctors. Taking this class is crucial for students who want to go into a medical career when they get out of college.
“They have experiences that will help them to get into Medical/nursing School, etc., experiences that will set them apart from all of the other many applicants,” EHP teacher Peggy Fuller said.
Exploring Health Professions provides students with wonderful chances to learn more about the medical career and what kind of job that student may want at some point in their own life.
Students get time in the classroom and time in the field. They learn medical terminology and learn how to act in real life situations.
The curriculum includes career awareness in the field and through self-directed activities, organization of health care, safety, ethics, and legal issues in health care as well as the history of health care.
“Absolutely love [teaching EHP],” Fuller said.
To take the class students have to fill out an application and be accepted. The deadline was Feb. 7, but don’t worry Fuller is still welcoming new applicants into the class. Incoming students say they are very excited to take the class and see what a medical career is all about.
Students who want to learn more can visit the Exploring Health Professions web site .
“I am really excited to take EHP. I want to shadow with vets and dentists,” junior Sarah Murphy said. “I just really want to help people.”
There are so many different opportunities that students are able to take advantage of during this class.
Fuller said the first quarter includes a review of the various possible career options, terminology and practices that are important to the health care professions. Most of the last three-quarters will be spent observing professionals in work settings from hospitals to offices to labs to nursing facilities to veterinary clinics.
Exploring Health Professions is an excellent class if you are looking to go into a medical career. You can have a lot of fun and experience a lot of new opportunities.
“I think EHP is an excellent class to take after Anatomy & Physiology if students are interested in health professions,” science teacher Lynn Martens said.
So, if you are interested in going into medicine, then Exploring Health Professions is the class for you.
