Mikayla Frey can not only sing, but slays the piano too.

For freshman Mikayla Frey, being a singer has always been her dream. She has said since she was a little kid, she remembers wanting to perform in front of thousands of people. Even so, she also remember throwing parties in her garage for her neighbors to hear her sing.

Mikayla Frey is not a normal ‘rock star’ though. She’s a sweet, caring girl, who comes from some unpleasant past memories. But those memories, which she keeps a secret, is what makes her head high and her personality charming.

From singing in a garage to singing in public, she welcomed the thought of a producer walking by while she sings. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened yet. But that doesn’t stop her from reaching her dreams. As of now, Mikayla goes to singing lessons twice a week to help train her voice. (Not to mention the constant singing in her room to High School Musical Karaoke.)

“I don’t mind going to lessons or having to learn new music to perform for an event. It’s all about experience and it is my passion so of course I don’t mind going. If anything, those Tuesday and Thursday nights is what I look forward to in my week.” Mikayla said

Though she tries to focus in her music and singing, school does have to come first. With struggling with sheet music and books and homework, the music has to come second. Mikayla said struggling with homework and my singing is hard to do. Of course she wants to have fun and sing all the time, but school and test is what’s really important. With struggling to keep her grades at all As and Bs, Mikayla may have to chop up a day of going to JCCC for her practices.

“I hate to think that we may have to cut back on her dream to keep her grades up.” Mike Frey, Mikayla’s dad, said. “Her grades are good but with the help of her not focusing on music all the time could put her back up to all As.”

With now an upset Mikayla, she focuses more on her work and tries to bring her grades up.

“I don’t like to think about being away from music that long.”  Mikayla said. “I may only see my teacher every Tuesday, possibly, depending on my grades, but just seeing her twice a week is too long for me. I wish I could go there every day. It’s my second home.”

While at lessons, Mikayla prepares for the summer music bash her teacher throws every year. It may be in June, but learning a brand new song is hard. With the new song she learns being “Jolly Holiday” in the musical “Mary Poppins”, the song is a duet. Not only is she having to sing it with a guy she does not know, she will only be able to sing it with him in a practice room with him 15 minutes before they perform the song in front many people. Not to mention she doesn’t even know the guy or his name for that matter.

But even with the fact she hasn’t met the guy, she simply doesn’t care. Even with four guys she doesn’t know, she would still go and sing it on a stage performing in front of 150 people. She loves music with all her heart and wouldn’t care if she had to sing by herself in front of 250 people.

“It’s all about experience and it is my passion. So why not?”
