A small, ferocious crowd roars and stomps at the last home boys basketball game of the season before heading off to Sub-State. For most, this is their last year at BVSW … these are the few, the proud, and the mighty “Southwest Supa Fans.”
The Supa Fans have become moderately popular in the district and in the social networking world. The group has its own Twitter account @BVSWSUPAFANS, which frequently post updates about dress up days for the games, schedules, and reports after each game. It is safe to say that the boys basketball team had a relatively good season this year considering their record of 13-9. Could this be because now that the Supa Fans have opened up in social networking, more people are informed about upcoming games?
Sophmore Johnny Dunlap definitely thinks so.
“Twitter is very popular among lots of students including myself,” Dunlap said. “It was definitely important for them to expand on twitter because a lot more people use it on a daily basis rather than listening to the announcements and things like that.”
The Supa Fans are mainly made up of upperclassmen. They are the leaders in the school and get everyone pumped up for games whether it be during class days, or just waiting for the game to begin in the stands.
“I would consider myself one of the Supa Fans,” senior StuCo president Megan Becker said. “However there really is no ‘defined’ group. The fans themselves who consistently show up to games and wear their spirited outfits, are the Supa Fans. It can be anyone really.”
Southwest is making a name for themselves and creating new traditions. Every new school year, marks a new group of fans. One will begin to see the real Supa Fans step forward to lead the school and cheer on the athletes.
Not only are students a part of this group, but teachers, too.
“I am a Supa Fan,” Biology teacher Joel White explained. “I have taped every varsity football game, kept the book for every varsity boys basketball game, and worked at the varsity boys soccer games and I have only missed once because of an illness.”
The Supa Fans not only cheer on their classmates to victory, but they don’t even realize the sense of unity they are building within this new community at SW.
