On March 29, choir students participated in the first ever, Blue Valley School District ‘s lipdub. The school’s choir department, under the guidance of choir director, Susan Scheibler, spent weeks learning the song, “Firework,” and added cappella to the pop song.
Freshman Kendall Miller, a concert choir student, was excited for the event and thought the shooting of the lipdub went well.
“My favorite part was the streamers,” Miller said. “It looked so amazing when they were all thrown.”
Miller was one of the many streamer-throwers in the lipdub introduction. The soprano singer was happy with the successful effect of the colorful streamers. Miller also said she was satisfied with the choir (and her) overall performance.
“We were all happy and looked like we had a good time singing and welcoming the ‘students’,” Miller said. “I thought I did pretty good.”
Freshman Andie Divelbiss, a concert choir student, was not happy with her performance. She thought that the choir could have rehearsed more, but also thought the introduction came together all right.
“I don’t think it was the best I could have been,” Divelbiss said. “I don’t think we rehearsed individual parts enough to be completely confident.”
The alto singer enjoyed singing the cappella and thought it sounded great.
“I think the best part was the initial chorus after the boom, boom, boom,” Divelbiss said.
Scheibler said it took a total of six weeks to learn the whole song, pick which part of the song to sing, and arrange the cappella.
“I think it’s cool that we were asked to be the opening for the lipdub,” Scheibler said. “Plus, I think it was pretty cool how we took the song and arranged it so that the whole song was able to be performed with just voices, and it sounds complete.”
Sophomore Bailee MacDonald, a choralier singer, thought the introduction was disorganized, but fun.
“It was a little all over the place because of the un-structuredness,” MacDonald said. “I think the streamers were pretty cool and hopefully I didn’t freeze in front of the camera because it was right in my face.”
Scheibler explained the introduction of, “Firework,” which was around 45 seconds. She said the story line was formed by the broadcast crew. The camera crew filmed future Timberwolves arriving at BVSW and they are greeted by senior and chorale singer, Colin Bennett. The students and Bennett break through a huge,”welcome,” sign and the choir begins singing the chorus of “Firework.”
The camera becomes the eyes of the new Timberwolves and the camera crew walks through a tunnel of choir members. This takes the new Timberwolves into the school as choir members sing to them, the person leading the elementary students into the school is senior and chamber singer, Mitch Appelbaum.
