This past Wednesday night on April 20th, Southwest had another list of students with awards to put under their belt. The journalism department inducted six students at the Quill & Scroll Induction ceremony at Blue Valley North High School in the Little Theater. These members include: senior Alex Cohen, juniors Haley Hansel, Kirsten Hughes, Malissa Liu, Marissa Locke, and Ellie Stewart.
Advisor of both the yearbook and newspaper staffs at Southwest, Heather Lawrenz, is proud of the students’ accomplishments.
“I think it is nice to have that number of students recognized for their work in our first year” she said. “High school journalists are rarely recognized for their achievements, so this is a nice pat on the back for all their hard work.”
Lawrenz believes that these same students will continue to help shaping the program and leading the staffs.
“Having a group of students that are dedicated to journalistic excellence will only help our publications more in the future,” she said. “Many of our inductees from Wednesday night are really going to help lead the staff. They are really going to help build the foundation of an award-winning journalism program.”
