The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One Review

Warning: Spoilers!

Are you?

Are you?

Coming to the tree?

In the first part of the last installment of the Hunger Games series, “Mockingjay” was a spectacle.

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson put on a show as Katniss and Peeta, who have had their home, District 12, destroyed by the Capital. Rescued from the 75th Hunger Games, Katniss is taken back to District 13, which was previously thought to have been destroyed. Despite Katniss’ rescue, Peeta met a much more unfortunate fate – he was kidnapped by the Capital. The plot that ensues bears a striking resemblance to the book, save for a few scenes that had readers raging over the changes.

As a reader myself, there were a few things that bothered me about the film adaptation:

  1. President Coin is portrayed as more likable than she was in the book. Her character was supposed to be hard and cold-hearted, yet in the movie she plays an important role in the formation of the rebellion.
  2. Plutarch and Coin send Katniss to District 12 to fuel her hatred for the Capital and to make her want to join the rebellion, but the book opens with Katniss discovering what happened to her district.
  3. Finnick was supposed to have a breakdown after Snow sent Katniss the flowers.

However, there were a few things that were added to the movie that I quite enjoyed:

  1. Effie’s role – Elizabeth Banks adds just enough humor to lighten up the sadness and violence throughout the movie.
  2. The “Hanging Tree” Lullaby – In the movie, it  was used to aid the rebellion, which added a nice spin.
  3. Finnick O’dair because, c’mon, he’s beautiful.

The next movie, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part Two,” is set to come out next year on November 20.
