I’m not really sure how to articulate how thankful I am for the support everyone on this staff has provided these kids over this past year. I know they can’t wait to get back to SW and celebrate. Below kind of explains the weekend…
Every state classification has two championships, one represents a style of debate that is oratorical, where students debate a round robin of teams to determine who will win the state title. At that tournament, the combined efforts of Emma Stewart, Greer Banks, Tristan Locke, and Lexi Oatman went 14-2 to win our 3rd 4-speaker state championship in 4 years.
The other tournament, 2 speaker, represents the fast paced style of argumentation that rewards critical thinking more than persuasion. 58 teams were in this tournament and at the end of 6 rounds of prelims, BVSW had 4 of the remaining 16. Zach Novicoff and Nick Edwards lost in the sweet 16. The remaining 3 teams made it to semi-finals. Jack Ayres and Connor Davis conceded to Katie Super and Jacob
. Chris Fry and Alex Ghekas lost on a 2-1. Both teams trophied and finished in a tie for 3rd place. In finals, Katie and Jacob won on a 3-0 decision to win our second state title of the day. This is the first time a school has won both titles since 2009, while there is no record of a school bringing home 4 trophies in one year.
Thanks again,
Jared Zuckerman
