Students Eat Breakfast and Discuss Books in the Library Breakfast Club

On a rainy Thursday morning, a group gathers in the library meeting room. A box of doughnuts is placed on the table, and the group begins to discuss the latest books they have read. Someone asks for a book recommendation, and is immediately bombarded with multiple enthusiastic replies. The conversation then shifts to newly released movies that are based off of books. This is the Library Breakfast Club.

According to Library Media Center Specialist Lindsay Hogan, Cristy Bolton who is the District Coordinating Teacher for Librarians started the club. She had a similar club at her previous school and wanted to continue it at Southwest.

“We all read books, usually on a certain topic or author, but sometimes we just discuss what we are currently reading,” sophomore Eunice Lee said. Usually broader topics such as a certain author or genre are chosen due to the availability of a book. It also allows for people with different interests read something that appeals to them.

A favorite part of the club that makes it unique is the breakfast snacks that are brought in for every meeting.

“Doughnuts are my favorite part of Breakfast Club,” sophomore Uma Desai said. “Even if you haven’t finished [reading a book], you can still come and discuss.”

The club meets the first Thursday of every month at 9 a.m. in the library.

“If you like to read there is a place for you,” Club Sponsor Liz Chopp said.
