The talk about dress code

School dress code is a big controversial issue at public high schools. A dress code is meant to enforce a better learning environment and to discard distractions, it’s not supposed to make people inferior about themselves and what they wear to school. Some people question whether dress code has gotten too constraining or if modern day clothes are getting too revealing. Here is some insight from students perspectives on our dress code.

What are your thoughts on the school dress code policy?

Mays: “I think that some of the dress code is a little extreme like showing shoulders…everyone has shoulders learn to accept it and respect it.”4499607858_4cea35fc9a_o

Levine: “I don’t think you should get in trouble for expressing what you like to wear.”

Do you think they’re reasonable restrictions to follow?

Klima: “I think the dress code at BVSW is very unreasonable because people should be able to express themselves in any way they would like.”

Mays: “However, even though I feel that the dress code is constricting, I understand when shirts are too low and shorts are too short, I don’t really want to see that while sitting at school.”

Levine:  “I think some restrictions are reasonable, I don’t think girls should be going around showing stuff people don’t need to see.”

What things about the dress code do you not agree with?

Klima: “I don’t agree with the rule that girls may not show their shoulders because it is distracting. I don’t understand why girls need to alter their clothing choices so that boys won’t look at them in the wrong way, I personally do not think it is a girls fault if they do.”

Mays: “I don’t agree with how certain teachers can enforce their own dress code. I’m not going to plan my whole outfit around one class. If it’s cute and I like it, I am going to wear it.”

Levine: “I don’t agree with not letting you have spaghetti straps. It really doesn’t matter if you do or don’t, nobody is looking at your shoulders.”

Do you think the dress code is beneficial to our school’s learning environment?

Klima: “I personally do not think the dress code is beneficial at all because it just shows us that we are all basically not allowed to express ourselves the way we would like to.”

Mays: “I don’t think the dress code is beneficial to our learning. You either pay attention to the class or don’t. Just because I show my shoulders doesn’t mean a guy can’t control themselves and focus during class.”

If you could set the limitations on the dress code, what would you make them?

Mays: “Limits should be that as long as your shorts cover what they should respectably, your whole stomach isn’t showing, and your shirt isn’t too low, then you should be fine haha.”

Why do you think so many girls have a problem with the dress code rather than guys?

Klima: “I think the girls have a problem with it because that is how girl clothes are made. We aren’t going to buy some special clothing just for school.”

Levine: “I think that guys are just more immature and they stare and that’s taken out on the girls privelages of wearing what they want.”
