Johnson county- is it an utopia or not?

stereotype after stereotype after stereotype…

Johnson County is kind of like an utopia- well, according to the stereotype that is. There are about 600,000 people living here, and most are victims of the Joco Bubble stereotype.

Uggs, Starbucks, leggings, iPhones, Nike elites, Chipotle, Victoria’s Secret  Pink, Snapbacks… the list goes on and on. All these items have somehow become associated with Johnson County, Kansas.

“Basically the girls wear Uggs, and always have a cup of Starbucks.” Freshman Sheridan Barnhart said.

Sure, there are a lot of girls walking around carrying Starbucks and wearing Uggs, but what if they just like the taste of Starbucks, or they think Uggs are comfortable?

It may seem like only girls get stereotyped, but guys actually get stereotyped too.

“Boat shoes. You’ll see a lot of guys wearing Sperrys, khakis and polos. Basically just preppy stuff.” Freshman Ellie Chramosta said.

Honestly, both genders get stereotyped; but for some reason girls have it worse.

“Girls really do have it worse, but I’ve met guys who complain about being stereotyped too.” Freshman Ashlyne Fahrnow said.

There’s not as many jokes floating around about typical Joco Guys, but if a girl has Starbucks one time she’s automatically cast off as a Joco Girl.

“It’s not fair, it’s really not.” Freshman Ellie Chramosta said.

Every person interviewed said they did not believe they were stereotypical. Yet both the guys and the girls admitted to having had starbucks before, or having an iPhone. Two even said they wear nike elites almost everyday.

It seems interesting that people are willing to stereotype others, but nobody wants to be stereotyped themselves.

“We live in a very judgemental world, and it’s rather petty.” Said Junior Jacob Burrow.

Stereotypes can take a toll on people. Once people have been stereotyped, they start to think they’re ‘just another typical person’.

Is the Starbucks just for show? Or does it simply taste good?

But in truth, everyone is unique in their own way, sure most people have had Starbucks, or they might have an iphone, and maybe they wear sperrys everyday… and that might make people stereotypical. But the cool thing is, everyone is stereotypical in their own way.
