Doughnuts for English

It all started with a deal and a promise. In Katherine Buchanan’s fourth hour English Language Arts III class, the deal was that if on Friday Sept. 20, which was the last spirit day before homecoming and also BVSW-themed, if everyone dressed up somehow relating to this particular day then she would bring in some kind of food for all of the people in just fourth hour.

Her reasoning was that if she offered an incentive in the way of food in order to get people to dress up then everyone would do it. However, two people did not complete the task. Luckily some other students rushed to the rescue and gave them BVSW shirts plus black marker for their cheeks so everyone would still be able to receive the promised food.

On October 1, Buchanan brought in five dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts. all kind of varieties from the original glazed to Halloween themed ones. Everyone got to enjoy two doughnuts while doing the Silent Sustained Reading day.

Caitlin McGuire thought that the whole idea was a great display of students getting motivated.

“It actually made us want to dress up and show spirit,” McGuire said. “It was great motivation. The glazed was of course my favorite. I think that is a great idea for teachers to offer an incentive to students in order to gain something. It is great motivation to get students to do something. Even just the offer of free time will get students motivated.”

Seth Thomas saw it as a teacher trying to effectively interact with their students. He also really appreciated the idea.

“I think it was a great idea because it shows that she cares,” Thomas said. “The creme filled spider doughnut was the best. Doing something like this shows that the teacher is there to have fun and make commitments to students.”
