Door jam

Every morning I trudge my way to the front door (typically in a morning funk), before I even make it into the school there’s a decision that I have to make. Do I hold the door for the folks in the same funk as I am, or do I let it go?

It never ceases to amaze me that something as simple as a door being held open can affect the direction of an attitude – at least for me anyway. Holding the door open is about as simple and old school as it gets, but like many other simplistic acts of kindness, it has withered away in the self-centered society we have developed.

When that random stranger in front of me chooses to wait that extra 5 seconds for me to make it to the door I might not think much of it. But when that random stranger chooses to let the door slam in my face when I am less than a foot away from the door, I definitely think about that. I don’t just think about it – I fume.

I try my best to remember the others who are behind me as I pull the door open, especially now that I have realized how it may (or may not) affect their day. This quick but kind gesture may be the smallest act of charity towards society, but steps can turn into leaps and as long as there is one stranger that will open the door for another, there is still a little hope for the human race in my book.
