As distance runners prepare for the upcoming track season after a break in the winter, they know they will have to make many sacrifices for their sport. Weather it is changing their diet and how many miles they have to run weekly when the season is going on. Or just as simple as stretching to a day to day basis.

A senior distance runner Ty Constant estimates that he runs 35-60 miles weekly when the season is going on. He practices six days of the week and he has different training strategies for every day he runs. His schedule consists of long running days, training days, and speed workout days. He practices running everyday after school. He always needs to work hard in school and keep good grades to be able to compete for the track team.

“I run a good amount of miles weekly so I do need to take care of my body during the season, I sometimes need to ice at least two nights a week,” Constant said.

Another sacrifice distance runners make is to change their diet while they are training. Junior Austin Ragusin says that when he is training for the season he usually does not eat as much candy and drinks mostly water. He never drinks soda when he is training for the track season. Runners have to eat and drink healthy to perform at their highest point.

“I never drink soda during the season because it gives me cramps on the side of my stomach when I am running, I stick to water when I am training for the season,” Ragusin said.

The third sacrifice distance runners have to make is that they always need to be stretching before and after every time they run. Freshman Dylan Miller says that before and after every time he runs he stretches.

“It is very important to stretch before and after running, and when wanting to become a better runner you want to be as flexible as you can be,” Miller said.

Lastly the fourth sacrifice is that they need to show up to practice at all times. There are really no days off when training. Sophomore Beau Constant says that he needs to show up everyday to practice because if he does not he will miss certain training days at practice.

“To become a better runner it means you need to show up to practice and not miss any days, it is the only way       you can improve,” Constant said.
