The girls golf is off to a strong start. They are three tournaments into the season and improving everyday. Focused and determined the girls work on qualifying for State.

At the first tournament, on Sept. 9, at Meadowbrook the team put up a hard fight. Although the team didn’t place, senior Jamie Rickert placed 4th overall and senior Nikki McCurdy placed 5th overall.

“I feel like we are all improving so much, “said senior McCurdy. “And I love watching everyone play and have fun.”

After the first tournament it was back to practice. Working hard four days a week will help improve the girls scores and that’s just what they did. They were getting pumped for tournament number 2 at Country Club of Leawood.

“I think our team is trying really hard and improving so much, “said McCurdy. “What I would like to see is everyone going to practice together every day because I feel that would increase the team moral.”

At Leawood Nikki McCurdy finished 5th with an 82 and Jamie Rickert finished 4th with an 81. All the other member of the team improved their scores. The team score improved as well.

Freshman Brooke Stoneman said that the freshman of the team can learn a lot from the older girls and are going to have to learn how to overcome obstacles.

A big obstacle that the team faces in new and less experienced golfers. Although they have enough to make a team most of the players are still new to golfing in harder tournaments. This is going to be a big obstacle they have to overcome.

Varsity coach Nate Winslow, who has been coaching golf at Southwest for five years, said work ethic is key. On the road to State the team in putting in all their efforts to help improve the team score. Though they have faced obstacles such as having a younger more inexperienced team, they are working hard and staying focused on the big goal.

Senior Jamie Rickert said that she hopes they can “finish better as a team at State .” She also hopes to place in the top 5 this year at State. She had a close finish with 6th overall last year.

“I just want our team to do well overall and be successful,” said Stoneman. With State coming up in a month, the girls hit the green and the range to fix the flaws in their swings so that their scores will keep improving.
