C-Team soccer overcoming Kansas

This year at Southwest the school has a quality C-team soccer team. Our team has been having a great year with a record of 2-3. This year they are being lead by a whole new set of freshman and three upperclassmen.

The main difference this year is that at the head of the team they have a brand new coach with Skylar Baker.

Skylar Baker who came to the rescue after an unexpected departure of the old c-team coach. Skylar Baker has a lot of experience in soccer from playing at Baker university as a defender. Freshman goalkeeper Cam Kersey said “Mrs. Baker has been great this year. We started this year with no official coach and our first game we lost 6-0 but right after that game she took over and worked us hard and lead us to a victory the very next week over Lansing.”

The main problem with the team has been that they’ve had a weak defense. When they have the defense running it lets the explosive attacking force lead by Will Hawker freshman striker the team leader in goals take over and put up goals or great efforts.

Will has been the guy who makes the long runs and big plays and starting forward Joseph Weidner said “Will is a great player who has the ability to change the game when he has the space. He has a great shot and reads defenses well so if he gets the space he’ll either score or find one of his teammates for the assist.”

This year like I said the team is 2-3 after its loss to BV West on September 22 This was one of three close games the team had this year which came out unlike we all would’ve thought.

This year we have a .666 win percentage in games within 2 goals apart with a 2-0 and 2-1 wins. These games are won mainly because their defense gives the offense time to work. Oliver Davis freshman midfielder said ” When we have a close game it’s usually because Jarod Long has a good game. We have had a lot of mistakes with defending but he makes a difference wherever he is from coming up on attacks and scoring off a header or saving games by getting huge stops.”

The main chatter throughout the team has been the move ups and move downs. Jarod Long and Oliver Davis had their first game playing with JV while Zach Huey played down on C-team and scored within the first half and ended with a quality game.

The team itself had to be worried that they would be losing their two best players said Cam Kersey but rumors calmed down after hearing that they were only playing a half of the game and then playing back on C-team.

As our season winds down with two remaining games the team will hope to finish strong and then be there cheering on for the varsity team and Junior Varsity teams.
