At 106, freshman Marty “The Man” Verhaeghe placed 6th. He won his match 2-0 in sudden victory against 25-15 freshmen Rylan Kasitz. The second match of the day Marty took on the defending state champion and eventual tournament state champion Logan Terrill and lost 9-3. Marty gave the state champion the closet match of the tournament. Following his loss, he took on (25-20) Jaelynn Gay and won 6-0. The win put Marty in the consolation quarters to take on (23-18) Konnor Dugan. Marty would go on to win the match 6-0 to become a state placer. Marty in the consolation semis lost to (44-6) Ryan Delforge 5-1 and then lost to (37-12) Landon Scott in the 5th and 6th place match. Marty finished his season with a 33-14 record.
At 132, junior Sawyer “Crazy Eyes” Like wrestled for a state championship and came up one point short losing the match 4-3. Sawyer started his day by beating (30-15) David Ortiz in a close match with a 4-3 decision. He followed that close win with a pin over (31-19) Kendall Biddle to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals he would take on (28-6) Greg Burley. The match came down to the ultimate overtime tie-breaker period. Sawyer had to escape to win the match and did to win the match 2-1 in dramatic fashion. That win set up the finals match against (28-1) Lukas Maki. Maki was able to edge Sawyer in a close match. Sawyer finished his season with a 41-5 record. Most likely when the final all class rankings are released Sawyer will be ranked number 2 all class at 132 in the state of Kansas.
At 152, senior Matt “All Smiles” McWhorter placed 3rd. In the first round of the tournament Matt faced (26-12) Nick Nece and defeated him 11-1. Following the victory he had to face (22-13) Leroy Franco, and had to score two point with 30 seconds left to secure a 7-6 victory. In the semifinals match Matt wrestled (31-6) Josh Ortiz. Matt controlled the match and was leading by two when Ortiz his a 5 point move to secure the victory leaving the final score 7-4 in favor of Ortiz. Follow the tough loss in the semifinals Matt would move to the backside of the bracket to take on (31-15) Brett Woodruff. It was crazy high scoring match with Matt getting a takedown at the end of the 3rd period to win 11-10. The 3rd and 4th place match would be a rematch of the previous weeks regional finals. He would be facing (35-17) Matt Pratt. In standard McWhorter fashion there would be no lack of drama. He once again secured a takedown at the buzzer to win and avenge the previous week’s loss. Matt finished his season with a 23-5 record.
At 120, Adam “The Action Figure” Pelfrey finished the tournament with a 2-2 record one match from placing. He final record was 35-11.
At 138, Trevor “Mega Watts” Watson finished the tournament with an 0-2 record. His final record was 24-17.
At 160, Joe “Shark Attack” Lemieux finished the tournament with a 1-2 record. His Final record was 24-20.
At 170, Dylan “The Giant” O’Dell finished the tournament with a 1-2 record. His final record was 27-18.
At 195, Austin “Truck Diesel” McBee finished the tournament with an 0-2 record. His final record was 26-18.
At 220, Anthony “The Assassin” Fitchett finished the tournament with a 1-2 record. His final record was 33-14.
At 285, Kyle “Salt N” Pepper finished with a 2-2 record one match from placing. His final record was 21-22.
