Students begin painting the walls of the drafting hallway

With every passing year, Southwest seems to add a touch of color here and there. At first it was as simple as painting the counseling office, then the painted tiles in the hallway gave the school a sense of identity, and now the drafting hallway is about to get a make-over.

Seniors Bailey Barnhart and Kelsey Hailey have decided to paint the hallway leading down to the drafting classrooms as part of their project for drafting four.

“We wanted to paint the hallway because we have been walking down it since freshman year and it’s always looked so depressing because of the blank walls,” Hailey said. “So this was the perfect opportunity to give it a little color.”

The two are incorporating things that they learned in their drafting one, two and three classes, in order to successful design the picture.

“First we had to get approval from Mr. Roberts, so we took our sketch designs to him and showed him what we wanted it to look like,” Barnhart said. “After that we began taping the border of the design out on the wall and then had to go back and tape the more detailed portions. Now we have begun painting the basic colors.”

Eventually the design will be a one point perspective of one side of a city street, with their inspiration coming from the back of the drafting classroom, along with the skills they learned in previous classes.

“I’m excited to finally give the school some color and put the skills I’ve learned to good use,” Barnhart said. “We hope to be finished by the end of first semester.”
