The Joy Formidable/Passion Pit Concert Review

Walking into The Midland for the first time was really surprising. The midland was fairly nice compared to most venues I have gone to in the past for concerts.  It had a huge amount of space for general admission, and the floor was staggered so if you were way in the back you could still see the stage clearly. I never had a problem seeing the stage and I also never felt suffocated by other people. The age spectrum was quite diversified. I saw kids that were in middle all the way up to adults in their mid forties to fifties.

The Joy Formidable was the opening act, and having seen them once before, I was not as impressed. The guitar and bass were barely audible, and it made their whole set extremely quiet and drove the energy way down. The last time I saw them they actually ignited a lot of energy in the crowd so I was a little disappointed that they didn’t do the same at The Midland. They played a mix of songs from their old and new album and finished off with the song that made them famous, “Whirring.” Their set was also kind of short for there only being two bands playing. Unfortunately, the crowd just wasn’t giving them the love they wanted, and they walked off the stage a little steamed. They would have been a lot better if the volume was turned way up.

After The Joy Formidable’s performance we had to wait around for about 45 minutes before Passion Pit came out. When they came out and starting playing, the energy suddenly entered the room. Everyone was dancing and having a great time. They played all of their most popular songs like “Take a Walk,” “Sleepyhead,” and “Carried Away.” Passion Pit really put on a great show, and you could tell they were having a great time on stage. If you ever get a chance to see Passion Pit live I definitely recommend going.
