This school year, some new changes have been made to the Homecoming royalty voting process. In past years, the court has been full of football players, marching band members, cheerleaders and other athletes, while now, all clubs and activities get a chance to nominate members of their own.
As somebody who is not in any sports, but rather is involved in theatre and the arts, I believe this change is fantastic for the school’s diversity. I am a junior, so I have witnessed the past two years of Homecoming courts. Both times, they were mostly filled with football players, cheerleaders and marching band members, which did promote some diversity. However, there was still very little representation from the arts and academics.
With this new voting system, all clubs, sports and activities will be able to nominate senior members to be considered to be on the Homecoming court. Larger activities, such as football, National Honor Society and marching band, will be able to nominate more people for Homecoming royalty due to their greater size, however, smaller activities are still able to have representation.
Now, the court will be able to consist of athletes, artists, musicians and many more. It is vital for all students to have representation, and now every single student can see themselves and their activity as royalty.
