With the Timberwolves 1-1 record going in to their third and final district game, it was a must win for Southwest as they took on the struggling Bishop Ward Cyclones on Oct. 28. From the moment the Timberwolves ripped through the banner, they never backed down, despite the Cyclones’ attempt at intimidation.
The Cyclones first drive ended in a turnover when sophomore Scott Anderson picked off sophomore quarterback Jon Roblez leaving the Timberwolves in solid field position. The Timberwolves offense kicked in as usual on their first drive, led by the running of sophomore Aaron Ramsey. The Timberwolves struck first blood off a Ramsey 1-yard quarterback keeper.
Soon after, Ramsey took it to the house on a 22-yard touchdown run to end the drive and give the Timberwolves a second score. Bishop Ward couldn’t get anything going after another turnover when senior Tanner Rozell recovered a fumble deep in Cyclones territory. The Timberwolves weren’t able to capitalize this time and were stopped short after an incomplete pass on fourth-and-thirteen.
The Cyclones were able to get a drive going into Timberwolves territory thanks to junior Micheal Golubski after several big gains on the ground. Southwest’s defense came up big, shutting down a fourth down QB sneak. The Timberwolves third score of the game would come through the air when Ramsey found Anderson all alone for a 35-yard touchdown reception.
Bishop Ward wouldn’t score until senior Geoffrey Kump scooped up a Southwest fumble for a 41-yard return, narrowing the deficit to 21-7. The Southwest offense would continue to roll with two more touchdowns before the half with Ramsey running for one score and throwing for the other to sophomore Dylan O’ Dell, making the score 35-7 at halftime.
Southwest’s junior Kyle Scheumann and O’Dell would continue to burst through the Cyclones defense throughout the game. Both teams would manage to score once more before the games end with the Timberwolves winning 42-14 after controlling all four quarters of the game. With the Timberwolves victory and a St. James loss to DeSoto, Southwest would advance to the 4A playoffs.
