Another Friday night under the lights, but this time with even higher stakes for the Timberwolves as they were set to take on the DeSoto Wildcats with the winner to clinch the district in KMBC Channel 9 News’ Game of the Week. Southwest had even more to play for considering that it was the Homecoming game on Oct. 22.
On the Timberwolves first offensive play, sophomore Aaron Ramsey busted off an 80-yard touchdown run. DeSoto’s senior quarterback Jeff Bowen struck back with a 48-yard touchdown run of his own, but the Timberwolves remained on top 7-6 after a failed two-point conversion by the Wildcats.
The next score would be by Bowen again with his legs, running for a 43-yard touchdown. Another two-point conversion failed, leaving DeSoto ahead 12-7. The Timberwolves sophomore Scott Anderson then set up a 1-yard Ramsey touchdown plunge from the goal line. Timberwolves up 14-12.
The Timberwolves were forced to punt and the last score of the half came after DeSoto’s junior Cole Cannon found paydirt on a 20-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats would fail another two-point conversion after sophomore Ben Lewis’ interception, making the score at half, 18-12.
The Timberwolves came out at the start of the second half and surprised the Wildcats with an onside kick which they would recover. The third quarter was scoreless.
The Wildcats put up three fourth-quarter touchdowns. Southwest’s second game of district play ended in disappointment after a rough and scoreless second half.
