I walked into study hall expecting to be able to get some homework done quickly, then move on to something else. I was sadly mistaken.
Study hall at BV Southwest is not what I expected at all.

When you walk into class, you receive a slip of paper on which you have to write what you’ll be working on and what materials you’ll be using. Then one of the four teachers, one to help with each subject, split you up into groups depending on who is working on what. By the time
fills out the sheets and the teacher splits you up, you could’ve already finished your homework and moved on to something new. Then at the end of the class, you have to write a reflection on what you learned that day and turn it in to the teachers.
Some students prefer to work in silence and you can’t do that when there are five other people around who keep talking or asking you questions.
I understand why the school wanted to organize study hall this way. Students need to be able to work together, ask questions and to get used to studying in groups, like we will have to do in college. But this doesn’t work for everyone.
I can’t concentrate on my book for English or my worksheet for math when I’m surrounded by other people who keep talking. The teachers split you into groups so that you can ask questions and talk about the what your working on.
When you don’t have any homework to work on, the teachers won’t let you listen to your iPod or talk to the other people who have nothing to do. The teacher makes you work on something “productive” even if it’s just reading a random book.
The rule used to be if you have to go to the bathroom or get something out of your locker, the teacher has to walk with you or watch to make sure you’re going where your saying. The teachers realized that some of the rules, such as that one, didn’t make sense and they changed it. There are still some things that need to be changed, but this was a step in the right direction.
All of this just seems like a hassle to go through all that so you can do your homework.
