Blue Valley Southwest is the newest member of the Blue Valley district, and on Sunday Oct. 3, Southwest was officially welcomed into the family.
“We’re now open,” Principal Scott Roberts said. “Obviously we have been literally open for some time now, but the dedication ceremony is the official marker.”
The ceremony kicked off with a speech from Roberts about all of the hard work put into the founding of the school, as well as the goals he hopes Southwest will achieve in the future. He then introduced senior Brannon Poston, who lead the pledge of allegiance. Poston was granted this honor due to his acceptance into the military, where he will begin serving immediately after his graduation this year.
Speeches were also made by Blue Valley Superintendent Tom Trigg, and President of the Board of Education Steve Klika, welcoming Southwest into the district, and expressing their high hopes for the future of Southwest.
After a performance by the band of their fall show music, U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore and Kansas Rep. Ray Merrick presented the U.S. and Kansas flags to Student Council co-presidents Mackie Louis and Ali Samazin, and delivered speeches on their hopes for Southwest in the future. Roberts was also presented with a painting of a wolf howling at the moon, which will hang in the front office.
A reception was then held in the courtyard, and tours were given by Student Advisory Board members.
“We are able to thank all of the people who have helped support us through the whole process of founding this school,” Roberts said “They are truly the people who made Southwest possible.”
